FKC’s Voice Is TOO Loud.
As we count down the days for the release of our Local Summer compilation album on September 3rd, we're thrilled to highlight one of the standout tracks from the album—a cover of MGMT's "Kids" by Forever King Clark. This local NJ band, known for capturing the laid-back, nostalgic vibes of Mac DeMarco mixed with early 2000s indie rockers, will also be performing at our release show on September 6th, bringing their unique sound to the stage.
Forever King Clark’s music is all about warm sounds, analog recordings, and good vibes, creating a sonic experience that feels like a sun-soaked memory. So, when it came time to choose a cover, "Kids" by MGMT was one of those songs they had really wanted to tackle for a long time but never quite felt ready to do it justice. It’s perhaps the quintessential indie pop song of the late 2000s, and as such, it encapsulates the memory of the summers of our formative years.
MGMT, formed by Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser in 2002, quickly rose to fame with their debut album, Oracular Spectacular, released in 2007. "Kids," one of the standout tracks from that album, became an instant indie anthem.
The song's catchy synth riff, nostalgic lyrics, and infectious energy perfectly captured the youthful spirit of a generation coming of age during the late 2000s. It's a song that speaks to the innocence and freedom of youth, yet tinged with a sense of melancholy as it reflects on the inevitable transition into adulthood.
Given the song’s significance, Forever King Clark didn’t want to do a disservice to MGMT with their version, so they spent a lot of time mulling over how to approach it. Initially, they considered taking a more faithful route, down to using some of the same synths as the original, but eventually, they decided that it would be pointless to do a mere recreation. Instead, they opted to take the same basic arrangement and infuse it with a more rock-forward instrumentation, bringing their unique style into the mix.
The result is a cover that they hope honors the original while also standing on its own. It’s their way of paying tribute to a song that means so much to them while also making it feel like a natural part of the Forever King Clark repertoire.
