Teen Idle Is Our Baby
As we prepare for the release of our Local Summer compilation album on September 3rd, we’re thrilled to feature a standout track by Teen Idle—a cover of The Beach Boys' classic "Don’t Worry Baby." In addition to contributing to the compilation, Sara Abdelbarry, the creative force behind Teen Idle, also created the artwork for the album and the flyer for our release show on September 6th- A big thank you to her!!!
Choosing a song to cover is always a challenge for Sara, given her extensive music library and deep musical knowledge. Initially, she considered going with a more eerie cover, perhaps reflecting her ambivalence toward the summer heat. However, she kept returning to one of her all-time favorite songs, "Don’t Worry Baby," which she considers to be the best Beach Boys song.
Having previously covered The Ronettes’ "Be My Baby" for another compilation, Sara was struck by the serendipity when she discovered that Brian Wilson wrote "Don’t Worry Baby" as a response to "Be My Baby." This connection between the two iconic songs made her choice feel even more fateful.
"Don’t Worry Baby" is a timeless classic that blends The Beach Boys' signature harmonies with a heartfelt vulnerability. Written by Brian Wilson and Roger Christian, the song was inspired by Wilson’s deep admiration for "Be My Baby," a track that profoundly influenced him. Wilson aimed to create a song that evoked a similar emotional response, leading to the creation of "Don’t Worry Baby"—a song about reassurance, love, and the youthful anxieties that Wilson himself was navigating at the time.
By covering this song, Sara aimed to pay homage not only to Brian Wilson’s genius but also to the emotional depth that resonates with so many through music. Her version serves as a reminder that even in moments of doubt, there’s always a melody that can lift you up.
