In the heart of the oceanfront urban landscape of Asbury Park, New Jersey, Dentist, a dynamic indie pop trio, recently found themselves facing an exciting challenge. We invited them to contribute to our upcoming compilation, but there was a catch – they had no new songs ready. Undeterred, Dentist embarked on a spontaneous journey that led to the creation of a fresh track, demonstrating the band's ability to fuse the freedom of the beach atmosphere with the urgency of the city.
Taking to Instagram, Dentist shared the story behind their newest creation. When Shore Points Records approached them, the band eagerly accepted the invitation, even though their creative well was temporarily dry. With just a couple of days before the recording session, Dentist delved into voice memos and old demos, only to find themselves empty-handed. In a bold move, they decided to craft a song from scratch, and the result was nothing short of remarkable. Despite the spontaneous nature of the process, Dentist expressed immense satisfaction with the outcome and hoped their fans would enjoy the surprise addition.
Dentist provided a glimpse into their typical songwriting process, emphasizing collaboration. Emily and Justin Bornemann, the driving force behind the band, initiate the creative journey by laying down an initial idea – often a melody accompanied by a riff or chord progression. This raw material is then brought to the rehearsal space, where the entire band collaborates to transform it into a fully realized song. This collaborative spirit has been key to Dentist's distinctive sound and resonates throughout their discography.
With their eyes set on the future, Dentist revealed their next goal: assembling a new batch of songs for either an EP or a full-length album slated for release in 2024 or 2025. In addition, there's talk of re-releasing their debut album, which hit the airwaves in 2014, on vinyl as part of its 10-year anniversary celebration. While Dentist remains hopeful for a year filled with touring, specific goals in that regard are yet to be finalized.
Originating from the vibrant music scene of Asbury Park, Dentist's sound blends the laid-back freedom of the beach atmosphere with the pulsating urgency of the city. Emily Bornemann's ethereal vocals intertwine seamlessly with the sometimes aggressive, always addictive sounds of Justin Bornemann on guitar and Matt Hockenjos on drums. Their unique fusion results in a fuzzed-out, surf punk-tinged brand of indie pop, adorned with hooks and infectious melodies that captivate audiences.
Dentist's latest venture into spontaneity for the Shore Points Records “Winter Rental” compilation showcases their adaptability and commitment to delivering fresh, engaging music. As they continue to evolve, Dentist remains a band to watch, offering fans a sonic journey that captures the essence of their coastal roots and urban influences. With promises of new releases and the prospect of revisiting their debut album, Dentist is set to make waves in the indie music scene throughout 2024 and beyond.
